Are you flushing drinking water down the toilet?

The problem of the bathroom sink wasn’t resolving itself; we decided to seize the opportunity and make some changes that had been on our minds for some time: why was greywater going to waste, while perfectly clean water was used to flush our dirty matter?

What a sign of our affluence and perceived abundance (even in times of drought), that using clean water to flush our toilets is a social normality.  It warrants repetition: we are, literally, flushing drinking water down the toilet. A depleting and finite resource, which 884 million people lack access to. Once this realization really hit me, I have been longing for an efficient, convenient solution, without invasive plumbing work or complicated greywater systems.

I found just what we were looking for in Gaiam’s Toilet Lid Sink.  Now, the clean water that flows through the pipes is diverted on its way to the toilet tank, and used to wash hands.  The water (now greywater) then fills the tank, and the toilet functions in exactly the same manner as before, but without the waste.  Bonus? Washing hands has never been so fun, and so my kids hands have never been so clean…
